What is smog and how does it effect on health and education.
Smog is a major problem in these days, everywhere. Smog is a type of air pollution which reduces visibility. The word smog is a mixture of fog and smoke.
What is smoke?
The smoke comes from burning fuel, coal, factories, industries, and emissions from automobiles. Smoke is dangerous for the respiratory system.
What is fog?
Fog is a natural atmospheric process caused by condensation of vapour. Because of the low temperature, the water droplets in the air become condense.
Causes of smog:
Major contributing factors are immense traffic pollution, crop burning and industrialization.
Smog is produced when the chemical pollutants and organic compounds, for example sulphur oxide, Nitrogen oxide release in air. These pollutants compound react with sunlight.
Types of smog:
There are two types of smog:
1- Photochemical smog
2- Sulphurous smog
. The most common smog is due to photochemical smog. The chemical pollutants react with sunlight which is dangerous form.
Cities which are more effected?
Those cities are more effected which are located in mountains because smog are trapped and can't carry away from cities. So, for these cities government should create some laws for restrictions of air pollution.
Harmful effects on health of smog:
• smog is harmful to respiratory system. When we inhaled, it may cause coughing, sneezing, lungs disease, ch
• smog cause burning the eyes, heart diseases.
• smog also effects the plant's life.
• In this year 2024, more than 240 children in Pakistan Punjab province died due to pneumonia. The main cause of pneumonia is smog.
Abdullah Fades is a UNICEF representative in Pakistan, said that" smog has devastating effects on health". He estimated that more than 11 million children under 5 years were the worst effect of smog. The small children are more effected due to sensitive respiratory system.
Harmful effects on educational systems:
Due to heavy smog, the schools, colleges, and offices are shut down. A smog is not only effect on health, but also destroy the educational system. Recently, school, colleges are closed.
Due to smog vacations, the students waste their time of education. Education is important for development but these vacations destroy this educational systems.
Protective measures against smog :
• Wear a mask all time when you're outside from home.
• Take care of your respiratory tract.
• Every night, you should also take steam of boiling mints water.
• Drink herbal teas and soup. Don't eat fast food or anything which irritates your throat and nose.
• If a small child is breathing difficult and don't feed. At this time, you should take doctor's prescription.
Strategies For Reduce Smog:
1- Use public transport
We should drive less and focused to walking ,or using public transport as compared to personal transport. Because when everyone used their personal cars, the emissions of smoke is increase which causes air pollution and reduces fossil fuels. So, we should use the public transport. We should walk when we are going near place.
2- Adopt electrical appliances
We should use electrical appliances as compared to gas equipment. Because gas equipment releases toxic gas in the air which causes chemical pollutants. For example, a lawnmower releases toxic gas in the air.
3- Plant more trees
Trees are an important source which helps in cleanliness of the atmosphere and causes rain which decreases the smog. Government should make strategies to tackle the growing strategy.
It is widely that forestation will help in plantation. Trees absorb toxic gas from the atmosphere. So, government should announce the planting in urban areas.
4- Reduce use of bricks kilns
Government should make rule for less use of bricks kilns because brick kilns emit black smoke in atmosphere. Instead of bricks, we should use cement blocks, which are affordable in low price. In this way, the emissions of smoke is decrease.
5- Install smog towers
Government should use smog towers which control the smog concentration. In develop countries, for the example,China has been used smog towers for control smog.
According to Ahmed Rafery Alam about smog
Ahmed Rafery Alam an environment lawyer in Pakistan. He is frustrated by government due to air pollution. According to him, the current smog in Pakistan cities in Lahore is terrible. He says that your eyes water fall when you look out of window in current smog situation. You can't see sky clearly.
Smog in Pakistan:
Pakistan is ranked number fourth country in Asia. In Pakistan, one third population lives in Punjab province. In Punjab, Lahore has terrible situation due to smog. Lahore, Faisalabad and Gujranwala are popular cities which face higher smog. According to recently information, the air quality index (AQI) in certain areas of Lahore is exceeded than quantity. The main reason is urbanization, high traffic and brick kilns in Lahore and other cities.
Call To Action For Government:
The Government of Punjab should make some helpful steps .To decrease the toxic effect of air pollution. Government should launched Metro bus, Orange train for public transport. It minimum effort can reduce the air pollution. Another is plantation or reforestation is help on anti smog compaign. Government also has been banned crops burning and heavy industrialization and have been heavy fined on those people. In this way, the air pollution is under control.
